A release liner is the unsung part of any pressure-sensitive construction: it protects the adhesive and then peels away cleanly at exactly the right force. Get the release wrong and you get pre-release, edge lift, or a liner that will not come off without distorting the part.
Coating type: silicone vs fluorine
Most liners use a silicone release coating on a PET film or paper carrier. For aggressive silicone adhesives — common in electronics and high-temperature tapes — a fluorine (non-silicone) release coating is used instead, because silicone-against-silicone will not release predictably.
Single- vs double-sided
Single-sided liners are coated on one face for standard label and tape stock. Double-sided liners are coated on both faces — essential for transfer tapes and stacked/rolled constructions where adhesive contacts the liner on both sides.
Specifying release force
Release force (how hard the liner peels) must be tuned to the converting process and the adhesive. Too light and the liner falls off in handling; too heavy and automated dispensing jams. A differential liner — light on one side, tight on the other — controls which face releases first in multi-layer assemblies.
When to choose antistatic
- Electronics and display assembly, where static can damage components.
- Clean, dust-sensitive processes where charge attracts particles.
- High-speed converting, where peeling generates static.
